Course Description

Getting Started with Web Archiving is an introductory course designed for librarians, archivists, researchers, and anyone interested in preserving web content for future access. This course covers the fundamentals of web archiving, including why it is important, how the web is archived, and the tools and techniques used to capture, store, and provide access to archived web content. Participants will explore key concepts such as selection strategies, metadata, and technical challenges in web preservation. By the end of the course, learners will have the knowledge and skills to begin their own web archiving projects using widely used tools and best practices. No prior experience is required.

  • Understanding the methods and challenges of creating, accessing, and preserving the World Wide Web.
  • Learn to speak knowledgeably about the tools, standards, and best practices for web archiving.
  • Evaluating the various web harvesting tools and analyzing their methods and scopes.

  • Create connections with digital preservation consortiums and working groups.

Leah Constantine is an archives specialist based in NYC with experience in museums, libraries, digital preservation, and cataloging. She is currently the Archives Senior Manager at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York City and teaches at the Pratt Institute's School of Information. She has introduced the first web archiving policies and systems in two major institutions and loves exploring new tools, ideas, and policies with users of all skills.

When does the course start and finish?

  • This course starts on APR 13, 2026. It is an asynchronous online course designed to be completed in 4 weeks.
  • Participants will spend approximately 2.5 hours each week on viewing lectures, answering quizzes, and completing written assignments.
  • It is recommended that you complete each week's work within that week to stay in sync with other learners.

When is the last day for enrollment?
  • The last day for enrollment is FRIDAY APR 10, 2026.

Will the instructor be available for feedback and questions?
  • Absolutely! Your instructor will provide feedback for each assignment and will be available via email or phone for any questions you may have. A discussion area is also available where participants can post questions.

How long do I have access to the course material?
  • You will have unlimited access for three months from the start date of this course.

Will I receive a Certificate of Completion?
  • In order to receive a Certificate of Completion you must:
  1. View all video lectures
  2. Answer all quizzes
  3. Complete all written assignments
  • When you complete these three items you can expect to receive you certificate within two weeks.
